The Plau Concerto is one of my favorite tuba conce The Plau Concerto is one of my favorite tuba concertos, but the third movement has always felt a little incomplete for me - and screams to have a cadenza added to it. This is the cadenza I wrote when I played the piece with the @nwsymphony a few years ago - and you can hear it on the album too!

When I was imagining what pieces to put on this al When I was imagining what pieces to put on this album, I knew I wanted to arrange something by George Walker; his writing takes elements from other American composers but doesn’t shy away from dark and heavy harmonies and textures - a key element of his music. His “Lament” is part of his “Nine Songs for Voice and Piano”.

When I heard @composer_cait's "Golden Hour" for th When I heard @composer_cait's "Golden Hour" for the first time (first performed by @reederhorn), it really stopped me in my tracks - Cait's music is filled with optimism and accessible harmonic language, making it really enjoyable to listen to and play.

I asked her to rework it for tuba and piano and she has been such a joy to work with. (And plus she's 🇨🇦!!) The piece really ties a lot of themes of the album together for me, making it the natural choice for the album title. Check out her music if you’re not familiar with her work.

🚨 NEW ALBUM ALERT 🚨 If one of your New Year 🚨 NEW ALBUM ALERT 🚨

If one of your New Years resolutions was to listen to more tuba, you’re in luck: my first solo album “Golden Hour” is now available on all streaming services!

This project really began to take shape when I ascertained exactly what I wanted to (and could) contribute to the already crowded current day musical landscape. The album features a few of my own compositions and arrangements, a commission by the fantastic @composer_cait (whose piece the album is named after 🇨🇦), and a few pieces that I believe to be cornerstones of the classical tuba canon.

I’m grateful to several people who played roles in bringing this to life:

Next month (November 12th), they’re releasing a new album of songs written by great Canadian artists like Drake, Deadmau5 and Rush arranged by @b.ride.music, and I’m grateful to have joined them on a few tracks. Check out the first single (Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen) on your favorite streaming platform!

Most people know I'm from Canada, and although the Most people know I'm from Canada, and although there are several terrific things about the land of the north, it can sometimes feel like you're on an island if you're trying to pursue music professionally or as a hobby. Growing up, it was sometimes difficult knowing how to progress on my instrument without spending a lot of money on lessons and travel.

Thanks to grants from the @mbartscouncil and the @canada.council, I've created a new video series called "Tuba Tutorials", which are mini-lessons up to 30 minutes in length covering some of the most popular pieces of tuba solo literature.

The first four episodes (covering the Hindemith Sonata, Penderecki Capriccio, Plau Concerto and Casterede Sonatine) are now available on my website (link in bio)! If you're a student looking for a way to start learning these pieces or a teacher looking for some fresh ideas, check these out!

Fast forward to now, and I'm so grateful that all these institutions and groups (and their gracious faculty/staff!) have given me a platform to speak about something I'm so passionate about, but that isn't addressed nearly enough.
