Midwest Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference 2026

The UMKC (University of Missouri – Kansas City) Tuba and Euphonium Studio and the UMKC Conservatory are proud to host the Midwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference (MWRTEC)—a major honor awarded by the International Tuba Euphonium Association. This will be UMKC’s first time hosting the event since 2003, and the 2026 conference promises to be bigger, more professional, and more impactful than ever.

MWRTEC 2026 is proud to welcome Carol Jantsch, Principal Tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra, for a concerto performance with the UMKC Wind Symphony, in addition to masterclasses and other activities.

COMPETITIONS

There are 7 competition categories:

  • Mock Orchestral Tuba
  • Mock Band Euphonium
  • Mock Band Tuba
  • Euphonium Student Solo
  • Euphonium Artist Solo
  • Tuba Student Solo
  • Tuba Artist Solo
  • Chamber Ensemble Competition

Competition Information

All MWRTEC competitions will take place on Monday, May 18, 2026.

Each competition includes a preliminary recorded round, and all competitors must:

  1. Be active ITEA members

2. Register for MWRTEC and for their specific competitions

3. Submit all materials by March 15th, 2026

Competitors advancing from the preliminary round will perform live on Monday, May 18, 2026.
Some competitions have specific rules or age requirements, so please read all details carefully.

Eligibility

Competitions are open to anyone who has never held a full-time professional performing position and has never been a full-time collegiate teacher.

Artist-Level, Mock Audition, and Chamber Ensemble competitions are open to anyone, regardless of age or professional status.

Previous winners of ITEC or regional conference competitions may re-enter the same category at MWRTEC.

All competitors must:

  1. Be current ITEA members

2. Be registered for and attending MWRTEC (May 18–20, 2026)

3. Finalists in solo competitions must use MWRTEC-provided accompanists in the final round.

Anyone with an accepted presentation proposal for MWRTEC may participate in any competition, including Chamber Ensemble.

Age-Specific Eligibility

The Student Tuba and Student Euphonium competitions are restricted to competitors under age 20 on May 18, 2026 (born May 18, 2006 or later). Proof of age must be submitted with the application. For eligibility questions: [email protected]

Application Fees & Deadlines

All competitors must be ITEA members and register through the ITEA website (link forthcoming).

Entry fee: $35 USD per competition

Chamber Ensemble competitors each pay the $35 fee individually

The host reserves the right to cancel competitions with insufficient entries (fees refunded if applicable).

Important Dates

  1. March 15th, 2026 Preliminary Recordings Due
  2. Notification of Finalists: No later than April 1st, 2026

Preliminary Recording Requirements

  • Piano is not required in preliminary recordings.
  • Recordings must be video, in one continuous take and unedited.

Prizes

Prize information will be announced at a later date.

SCHEDULE

A full schedule of events will be released in early 2026 and will include:

  • Guest artist solo performances
  • Masterclasses and clinics
  • Chamber and ensemble concerts
  • Health, career, and entrepreneurship sessions
  • Vendor showcases
  • Evening concerts with the UMKC Wind Symphony & Fountain City Brass Band

REGISTRATION

 

Online registration will open in late 2025.

Fees:

Member (full conference): $75 

Member (early bird): $65 

Collegiate student: $50 

Invited presenter: $50 (or $40 early bird)

Competitor: $40 (plus competition fee)
